In the last week I’ve noticed that GM is offering almost $10k off sticker on the SS. I see them advertised all over at right around $39k. Why aren’t we buying these immediately?

Damn, I wish I wasn’t putting an addition on my house right now...

Because the only people who know they exist are enthusiasts and all of us who were ever going to buy one have done so already.

Because I only afford something up to $20k at the moment and don’t feel like financing the rest. Even if I did see a prime Sunset Orange Metallic’ish example the other day...

I can’t speak Goethe majority but I’m not buying them because I don’t have $39k

I love this car. I love the idea of it and the execution...except the exterior design. See, I actually prefer the looks of the new Impala or Malibu to that of the SS.

It’s sad. I have only seen one or two in my area and only a handful more in the city. I haven’t even seen it get any press coverage, hell I don’t even know the specs of the car.

Even people with means to buy one weren’t dumb enough to do so.

Maybe with 10k off though.

Yes, this was discussed briefly last week.

I am trying to convince the wife to get an SS. She is completely against the Chevy name, though. Thanks to PatBateman’s advice, I think I got a foot in the door with the “it’s a Holden, we can just swap the badges” angle.

It will probably take me a year, but I’ll wear her down.

I can’t buy one because I’m Canadian, and importing one from the US new would bring the price up to $60k at least.

I saw this last week:

But is it a badge swapped SS?

I don’t have 39k, and if I did, I’d spend it on something way better than a Chevy.

Because I work in the parts dept and I keep my cars past 10 yrs. I know that on a low production number vehicle that some items are being discontinued in as little as 10 yrs. I don’t want a car that I’d even have issues finding a used part for from a junk yard.

Yes, yes it is.

From looking on line, the difference is just the front and rear badges (Chevy to Holden), a new plastic grill that fits the badge, and the addition of the Commodore VF badge.

It's still a stretch for me at 39, though I think that is a great price. I have a year to go on some debts that would allow me to afford this, I will seriously consider it then, if its still around.

FYI there’s a stop sale on the SS due to a seat belt recall. However Chevy did extend the 20-30% sale for another week or so on the SS and a few other models. ;-)

If you in parts at a dealer, you should know that suppliers are contractually obligated to provide parts for 15 years after End of Production. Prices are fixed at production price for 5 years after EOP, to be negotiated thereafter.

First good luck finding a manual on a dealer lot, second in automatic, the Charger SRT392 or Taurus SHO is a better every day car, in my opinion. Especially when you can get a fully loaded SHO for 38k.

Believe it or not, they had a manual on the lot at the local Chevy dealer here in Green Bay. It sold immediately when this sale started.

Do your homework. I’ve been in parts for over 30 yrs and never recall a 15 yr availability. What decade are you living in? About 20 yrs ago our politicians sold us out . Way back I believe the law was 12 yrs , then down to 10 yrs and now 7 yrs for all consumer products. Doesn’t matter if its your car , microwave or TV , ANYTHING that spares are required for. Thats from the start of production. So lets say you bought a NEW car that had been in production for 4 yrs already and 4 yrs later it needed a part that the manufacturer happened to stop making because demand was low but that part started to fail in 8-9 yrs of usage. You would have to look for a used or aftermarket one. It happens all the time now. Talk to any parts guy or TV repair place, the laws changed many years ago. Planned obsolescence.

Here is one reference on the web. http://www.hdtvmagazine.com/forum/viewtopi…

I’m not sure, but all the GM dealers around here are doing it. I doubt the mothership website would have it as part of the configurator. I’m sure the sale only applies to dealer stock.

I hear you. It’s not the sharpest look GM has ever put out, but it’s tolerable. However, loaded V8, manual, RWD family sedan. If the Impala was RWD, I would be all over it because I like the look so much better.

The SS is amazing and a great value even in the mid-40's. As far as looks go, the aftermarket has made them look pretty sinister.

2016 Scat Pack Charger comes to mind. 39k, more horsepower, and in my opinion better looks. Granted I’m not a 4 door sedan fan at all, regardless of make.

Here is a copy of the California code which states the same 7 yrs and references FTC federal law. http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/displa…

In general we are now seeing demand drop off and many GM parts being discontinued at about 10-12 yrs on average. Need an example call a GM dealership for a fan shroud on a 2006 Pontiac GTO.

Fair enough. FCA upgraded the looks on the Charger enough to get my attention.

However, I like to fly under the radar, so the SS appeals to me a bit more. And as a dad with two kids, I would love to have a RWD V8 family sedan rather than a crossover or a FWD turbo 4.

I scoured every Chevy dealership in Michigan and Ohio last Sept. Looking for a manual SS. Even in dealerships that “specialize” in performance cars they only had the automatic on the lot, maybe things have changed since then. I still think that the Charger SRT392 is the better value in the segment, and in Michigan winters both the SS and the SRT make poor DD’s compared to the SHO.

I do this daily too. Call any make dealership for parts or stop in one and ask about how long parts are made or start looking at parts catalogs and how much they are discontinuing before 10 years. GM just discontinued the wiper motor for the early 2000's Impala. Its every day I have to relay to people that something is no longer made. GM might have that in a contract with suppliers for that time period so they can exercise the right to purchase those parts but it not part of FTC regulations. Start searching federal law. BTW I was in the last party GM had in Vegas after the bankruptcy for the top 600 parts and service people in the US. We stayed at the Mirage. I’m not the average parts guy. I know of what I speak.

From what I’m seeing there was a law in the 60s requiring 20 yrs which was deregulated in the 80s and has been tied into the Magnuson-Moss act and warranty periods. Even though California law cites the federal law as 7 yrs I can see no set time period in any government publication but since most long term warranty periods expire about 7-8 yrs that must be where it comes from. The law says they have to supply replacement parts during warranty coverage. The loop hole that’s been provided doesn’t state if they have to have new or used parts and just states that a manufacturer just has to be able to provide a repair during the stated warranty period. Nothing in the law states exactly how long they have to provide anything but a repair solution. If you can talk to your legal department I’d like to know what they know about this because its been talked about in parts guys circles for about 15-20 years.

This was not an insult directed at your car. Chill out.

You’re comparing a Taurus SHO to a 392 Charger and an SS. 365 HP, FWD biased, 4300 pound V6 to RWD V8s with 485 hp and 415 horsepower, respectively. I fail to follow the logic.

I’d honestly rather get an FD RX7 and a first gen Viper (non GTS) for roughly the same cash. Newer cars don’t really do much for me, I keep one around for long trips though. No kids yet, I’m sure that will change things when the time comes.
